Some basic skills are required to be a critical thinker;

  •  observation,
  •  analysis,
  • interpretation,
  • reflection,
  • evaluation,
  •  inference,
  • explanation,
  • problem solving,

Mastering these skills will set you up to be a critical thinker, and allow you to solve problems from basic information.

The key part if being a Critical thinker is being in a learning mode and not being a passive recipient of information, but seeking out sources of information to aid in decision-making.

One of the key challenges to applying critical thinking principles is overcoming personal biases we have built up over the years. You can overcome your bias by acknowledging they exist, examining them and being able to analyse the impact of your biases on your decision-making processes.

In part 2, we will look at ‘Why we need Critical Thinking’
